Bike Day

We couldn't wait for our turn to go out and get on the bikes. There were so many different ones. Some of our favourites are the lawnmower bike, the water shooting bike and the bike taxi. We all tried as many as we could!!!

Cricket

Room2 and Room3 were lucky to get some cricket coaching from Ewan. He taught us about catching and how to have 'soft' hands. He showed us the right way to bat and then we played a batting game. As you can see from this picture we were getting pretty good!

Careers Day

We had a great last day of term when Otago Polytechnic came along and showed us some possible jobs that we might think about in the future.
We were able to listen to the heartbeat of the dogs that came with the veterinary science people which was fun.
We nailed in nails with the carpentry people and looked at  lots of other job options too. We all dressed up also as the jobs we thought we might one day want to do.

Space Exploration

Here are some of the space shelters that the children designed and drew for their homework We have now landed on Theta and we are getting used to life on a new planet. The children have written postcards from outer space and have made special space food as well as finding out lots about the planets they have visited.Sometimes working from their space craft was tricky because it involved lots of cooperation and compromise.

Pakiki Kids

As part of the Pakiki Open Day the children dressed up . Their study was on forensics and so everyone chose some aspect of this! As you can see the children from Room 3 looked great!!! One chose to be a victim and one a burglar.

Strike

Last Thursday, the school went down to D.N.I. to watch 'Strike'.  There were three men on stage, Mr. Sparkle, Cookie Monster, and Mr. T.  They played all sorts of percussion, marimba, drums, and their bodies.  We all enjoyed the 'Cup song' and it was very exciting when they used fire.It was really loud and fun.

Life Education

We have had two sessions with Harold in the Life Education bus. We have been learning about body language and being able to tell how people are feeling. We also talked about how we can be friendly to others. We are all going to try to be friendly especially when new people come to our school .

St John Safe Kids

Belinda from St John came and talked to us about how to contact the emergency services and what to say . We know that we have to speak slowly and clearly and give details in our address because the centre is in Christchurch and they might not know that we are in Dunedin if we dont say!
We also learnt some first aid. Cameron, Kurt and Paige were the patients.

El Grego

On Thursday, the school went to El Grego for a performance on stopping bullying.  The slogan was, "You've got the power!"  El Grego told us that we can be a HERO, helping, encouraging, respectful opportunities.  El Grego did magic tricks with birds and tomato sauce and we all had fun.

New Seats

Mr Harvey has been installing some new seats in the playground. Te Awa's mum has done the carving out of Oamaru stone and they look really good.

More marvellous maths.

We have started looking at parallel lines and perpindicular ones too .We drew them on the ground and also found some around the playground. Then we  started measuring all sorts of things.

Swimming

We have just finished our swimming block. We went every day for 8 days and we improved alot.

Safe Cycling

We are looking at keeping safe on the road and making sure our bikes,scooters and skate boards are all road ready. Constable Sommerfield came along to talk to us. He brought a bike with him and we looked at all the parts and how to check that they are safe. We also looked at our helmets and made sure that they fitted properly.  We are looking forward to our practical test where we ride on the playground and do hand signals and stop in the right places.

Marvellous Mathematicians

We have been looking at shapes, 2D and 3D, and looking at angles. We hunted round our room and found lots af right angles.

Now we are on the hunt for acute and obtuse angles!

Rosie's World

                                                               FARMTASTIC
Rosie came to school to tell us all about dairy farming .There was Farmer Tom and his farm helper Becky. They were visited by Tom's nephew Matt from Auckland.He didnt know anything about farms or cows so they had to teach him. He was scared of Rosie to begin with but in the end he helped to do the milking.

We found out that cows have 4 stomachs, they eat 90 kg of grass a day and they are milked twice a day.!!!

Art Gallery trip

On Friday Room 3 went to the Art Gallery to work with Mr Neumegen.

  We were looking at bugs.  We learnt that the sand-flies and the mosquitos had a fight about when to bite humans.  The mosquitos said at night but the sand-flies said they should go out at daytime.  Then the sand-flies said, "You should go out at night and we will go out at day". 
Then we watched a movie about a snail crossing the road and it got stepped on. 
Then we started to draw bugs.  I drew a spider.  It went off the page. We had a great time.

Golf

 Melanie came to school to teach the senior school children about golf. First she showed us how to hold and swing the club and then we started hitting a big ball and then down to a plastic golf ball. We think we did well!

Botanical Gardens

Rooms 2 ,3 and 5 went to the gardens as part of their study on plants. We had morning tea after we walked down from school then we walked to the top and were put into 3 groups . We walked through the bush, we dissected flowers and we looked at the Maori uses of plants and did lots of other interesting things. In the afternoon we sketched and looked in the hot house and found out about all sorts of different habitats.Then we walked slowly back to school.

Plants

Our big study for this term has been Plants and we have learnt all sorts of things about plants . We know the parts of plants and their life histories and we have done experiments with them . We started the Great Bean Race but only about 5 beans grew. We think it must be the drought  !! Riley's bean was by far the biggest so she must have given it just the right amount of water and care. Our cress experiments weren't much better so we certainly learnt how farmers trying to grow crops must be feeling.We put these flowers in dye to see how it travels through the plant. We also made lavender bags. Its all been fun.

College Teachers

We are really lucky to have two College Teachers this term. We have been doing lots of fun things with Ms Colbert and Mr Paul.

Beach Ed

Just after our trip to Toitu we were off again! This time we went to St Kilda Beach for Beach Education.  The  life guards were great and told us a lot about their jobs and what we can do to keep safe when we go with our families to the beach. We were told about keeping safe in the sun too . Meila was chosen to try and remember lots she'd been told and then Holly got dressed up in the life guard uniform and had to rescue Dylan from a "rip". We had morning tea and lunch on the deck and in the afternoon we played games and went swimming . It was another great day.

TOITU

We had a great trip to Toitu on February the 8th. First we got to look at old photos in groups and tried to figure out all about them. We also went to the Chinese Gardens to find all sorts of patterns. We saw a band practising for their Chinese New Year Festival. Then we went back to the museum to have lunch and play dominoes. Next we made Chinese lanterns. Last of all we got dressed in clothes from the olden days and even got to wear them home . We showed the rest of the school at assembly. We had a great time.

2013

The year has started and we are already hard at work!! There are 27 of us in Room 3 and we are a Year 3 and Year 4 class. We have Mrs Evans-Weir teaching on a Monday, Tuesday morning and a Thursday and Mrs Hesson on a Tuesday afternoon,Wednesday and a Friday. Mrs Hesson is also in charge of Flippa ball. Our library day is Thursday.
