We are using this blog to keep everyone up to date with what is happening in our room.

Marble Tracks
What fun!!! We made marble tracks as part of our study of Forces. We learnt about friction and acceleration and how things speed up or are slowed down. Our tracks were meant to have a jump and a loop as well as straight bits and sloped bits. Here are some of our efforts.

Maths and Measuring
We have been looking at how much things weigh. We tried to find objects in the room that weighed about 1 kg and then we looked at packages from the supermarket and checked out their weights. Then we looked at the shapes of containers and estimated how much liquid they held. It was good fun using water outside and we realised how hard it is to be accurate!

Homework Presentations
Over the last few weeks of term we have been writing reports on animals at school. We read books and gathered the information and organised it with headings. We found out lots of new and interesting facts about animals like the kea and the platypus. Then we got to choose something we were interested in and write a report on that for homework. It could be anything from a sport,a hobby, an animal or an invention. The really good thing was we could present the information any way that we wanted. Everyone worked really hard and made fantastic presentations which we shared with the class. We had them on display in the hall during the last assembly and they are now on display in Room3 and in the office area. Here are just a few of them.
Keeping Ourselves Safe
Earlier in the term we started a topic on Keeping Ourselves Safe. We looked at who we should go to if we have problems and how to cope with some tricky situations. We talked about body language and it showing how people are feeling. When we are feeling proud and confident we look and move differently than when we are sad or frightened. We also looked after an egg for a few days. This was to help us realise how difficult it can be to look after "someone" all day .We made special houses to keep our eggs safe.
FORCES
As part of our study on forces we looked at gravity and air resistance. We made parachutes and dropped them from the balcony and watched how the parachutes opened out and slowed down their flight.
Soccer
The senior classes all had the opportunity to have soccer coaching from Elise. She came each Wednesday afternoon and we were able to practise our skills and also have some games. It was fun.
Kapa Haka
Over the last few weeks we have been working on our waiata and haka that we are going to perform at the Edgar Centre on the 17th of September. We think we are starting to sound really good and we are getting excited.

Musical Visitors
We were really lucky to have three musicians come to school and demonstrate their skills. They played lots of great music and we enjoyed singing along. They give music lessons too.
El Grego
El Grego came to school and talked about bullying and what we can do to stop this. He used all sorts of magic tricks to help us understand. There were birds and never ending water and disappearing ladies.

Arrival in the car park
We were surprised to discover an art work in our car park the other day. It seemed great timing though because the whole school has been involved in art activities getting ready for our exhibition. This art work was put here by the Northern Artery group and it is a sculpture of an oil rig made from the feathers of sea birds.
How to make a Fossil
How to make it:
First get your container and fill it up with sand.
Then get your shell and place the side with the pattern into the sand.
Now put in the plaster of paris and let it dry overnight.
When it has dried take your fossil out of the container and brush it.
Then put it under the tap for a minute and then you have a fossil.

Easy Lawn Mower
It was found in a shed...abandoned, smelling musty, old. Such a beautiful place we found it in. Pine trees all old. This place is always sunny. This place is the Hakataramea.
We tended it, oiled it and finally painted it. Now its lovely. It smells like soft paint and pushes like its name....Easy!

Art Groups
Everyone in the senior school has been put into small groups and each Wednesday and Thursday afternoon we work on art activities. We can choose to do sketching, clay work, print making, embroidery, cartoons, digital photography or plastic flower making.
Jewellery Maker
We were really lucky to have Lola's mother come to school and demonstrate how she makes her necklaces and bracelets. First Ange showed us a small ball of silver and then she let some people use her hammer and anvil to flatten it . Then she wound some silver wire round a rod and used her saw to cut the links. Its these links that she joins to make the jewellery. Lola showed us a beautiful necklace and bracelet that Ange had already made. It was very interesting to see how jewellery is made.
Another trip to the Art Gallery
When we first went to the Gallery we were able to spend time with all the Lego. It was really good. Then we went into the room with Mr Neumegen and worked on our dinosaur art works. Thanks again to all our great parent helpers.
SWIMMING
We have started swimming at the DNI Pool. Every day for 2 weeks we catch the bus at 10 o'clock and follow Room 2 into the pool. Everyone is improving and we are all enjoying ourselves.
Snow Day Thoughts
Snow is icey cold and great fun
It crunches when you stomp on it
It flutters down in flakes
that are as beautiful as butterflies.
It is white as clouds
Snowballs that explode with fun-ness.
It freezes me like solid ice
Its weakness is fire .
Snow makes everyone happy.

ART GALLERY
We enjoyed our trip to the Art Gallery. As we are studying water we focused on this and looked at the environment and water pollution. Mr Neumegen helped us lots and so did our parent helpers.
You can see our amazing art work on the walls in our room.

More water activities
We are busy writing messages to go into bottles. We hung the bottles in our room and we will look at them later in the year and hopefully we will have improved our writing a lot! We have lots of interesting work on our walls that you should come and read.
