Here are some of our  weather presenters, sports reporters and news presenters from our Tuesday current events news show. Well done to them all.

Maths Evening.

Thank you to all the people who came along to the Maths evening on the 22nd.
After Marilyn Holmes spoke to everyone in the hall it was great to have the parents and children come to the room to see some of the activities we do during class time . We had "demonstrators" showing the E-Ako programme  that we use, others showed apps on the i- pads and also the basic facts programme that the children are enjoying.There were children demonstrating problem solving and simple card games were played as well as games from our 'games-box'. Activities from the Figure it Out series were shown too.
It was really good to be able to chat about maths and how it is taught , if you have any questions please pop in and see us. These pictures show the children during a daily maths lesson.

S2 News and Views

Our Tuesday current events programme has developed into a TV news format. We have two news presenters and this week we introduced a weather reporter.
Each week something new is being added which makes it even more interesting.
Last week our roving reporters added their reports after the  presenters were finished, this week we had very well dressed presenters and some video of twin polar bears being born! Then Rata  did an excellent job using the map of NZ to explain what we can expect with weather over the next few days. Matty and Layla were really good at presenting local, national and international news. Next week we are going to add a sports reporter rather than having our presenters having to do all the work!!!  

Soccer Coaching

Danny came to our school to coach soccer to the whole senior school. Our time slot is 2.00-2.30 every Monday afternoon for 5 more weeks. For our first session we did lots of fun activities to warm up and then we practised skills with the ball. We are already looking forward to next Monday.

Exciting Ice Experiment

After the experiment to see which water froze first we tried another icey test. We put an ice cube in a bowl of water and tried to pick it up just using a length of red cotton......impossible we thought. Then we sprinkled salt on the top of the ice cube and tried again. Surprisingly the cotton moved the ice cube a little. It was enough of a lift that we put more salt on the cube and left it for a few seconds. Sure enough we could lift the ice cube. We were pretty excited!!!!

Science Experiments

We talked about which  type of water the children felt would freeze the fastest. Most everyone thought tap water would freeze faster than salt water so we decided to test to see if we were right. We put half a cup of both types of water into the same size plastic bags and put them in the freezer. Every hour someone went up and checked. The result.... by 12 o'clock there were lots of icey blocks in the tap water bag but only a very thin layer of ice at the top of the salt water bag. So we now know for sure that tap water freezes first.

A Great Run

After reading the Otago Daily Times on Tuesday, we discussed the amazing run of Glenn Sutton. He started on the West Coast and over three days ran to St Clair. This is the equivalent of 10 marathons. We talked about how he must have felt and this is what Lily came up with.....

Running on a cold hard road, nice cold water for my dry mouth and hot body.
Keep going.
Only 3 km away until I can finally eat something sitting down!!
I've run approximately 417 kms already and it seems like I've been running for years.
Day and night.
Dig deep and be determined to finish uninjured and proud of myself.
I am going to finish, I am going to finish, I am going to finish...I chant that over and over again.
I can't wait to see my friends and family at the end.
I'm nearly there.
 I want some rest and I'm so exhausted.
Finally I'm home after day after day and night after night for 3 days.
I've run 10 marathons in 3 days,in 67 hours, 420 km. I ran.
Finally I can sleep and eat and drink sitting down.
I am finally there!!!!

Well done Lily . It sounds like you really thought hard about he would have felt.

Communication

Our theme for the term is Communication.
We tried to think of all the ways that we communicate and we came up with lots of ideas. Someone suggested sign language and we found it was actually Sign Language Week. People thought up unexpected ways to communicate such as a lighthouse and traffic lights, as well as the more expected cell phone and newspapers.
We are looking at the Otago Daily Times and thinking about the different sections that there are in our newspaper.

Hockey Hockey Hockey

We started playing hockey at the start of the term. First we learnt how to trap the ball and move it on in a controlled way. Then we passed it from person to person without stopping the ball. . We started moving quickly while passing  the ball. The next job was trying to get the ball off others. We are doing really well and now have the skills to play a game.

News Presenters

Hana and Lily did a great job as news presenters. They read the week's news and then heard from our roving reporters as well. Congratulations to them both as they were fluent and spoke clearly,making  the news interesting. I wonder who will present the news next week?

Great Writing

 Hana has written a really interesting start to her story. I don't think there are many stories that are written from a starfish point of view.

I lay still silently.
Someone was picking me up!
This thing isn't easy, being picked up all the time.
It isn't easy being a starfish!
The human gently placed me down again. Not like the other one who had thrown me down and broken my arm. Luckily it grew back again.
Suddenly I got picked up yet again.
"Ouch!"the person cried.
"Are you okay?"asked a man with chocolate brown hair.
Now the boy was screaming like mad.
"Hey!Oi Benny! Has a crab bitten you on the bottom or something?"
Benny was wailing. Two girls came over. One was about ten and the other thirteen.
Finally Benny started talking,"A crab bit me twice, no three times and this starfish saved me from being bitten again".
He held me up as the girls ran off to find their dog.Meanwhile Henry had gone to the ice cream truck................


I wonder what is going to happen? We want Hana to carry on writing this story so we can find out what is going to happen to the starfish next.
